Checking a criminal lawyer’s credentials involves two separate tasks: verifying authorization to practise and evaluating the experience relevant to your case. A website biography can help with the second task, but it should not replace the first.
Search the Law Society of Alberta’s Lawyer Directory using the lawyer’s full name. Review the practising status and business details shown. If you find several similar names, match the office information rather than assuming you have found the right person.
The directory also provides an Alberta enrolment date. That date does not, on its own, establish how much of the lawyer’s career has involved criminal defence or a particular type of proceeding.
Ask the lawyer to explain unfamiliar designations, memberships or training claims. Distinguish a professional licence from an association membership, a course and a marketing award. These describe different things.
A conversation with an Edmonton criminal defence lawyer can then focus on the work behind the biography: trial preparation, bail proceedings, evidentiary applications or appeals. Look for a connection between the lawyer’s experience and the decisions your file presents.
Public court decisions can demonstrate that a lawyer appeared in a particular matter. They do not provide a complete measure of the lawyer’s ability or explain every factor behind the result.
If a case is discussed on a website, ask what issue makes it relevant to your situation. Different evidence, charges, procedural histories and legal rules can lead to different outcomes. A past success is not a prediction for a new file.
Do not request confidential client records as proof. Public information and an explanation of the lawyer’s general approach are more appropriate starting points.
The person whose credentials attracted your attention may not be responsible for every task. Ask who will advise you, review disclosure and attend key hearings. If other lawyers or staff will assist, understand their roles.
Keep a brief verification record with the date checked, the lawyer’s name and any questions still open. Use that record alongside a written retainer and a direct discussion of availability. Credentials help establish a foundation; the final choice also depends on the actual service being offered.
