Proofreader in Raleigh, NC
I realized I had a strong eye for detail while scouring huge spreadsheets for discrepancies in my role as an accounts receivable help desk agent. When I caught a tiny (but crucial) error and was able to provide a resolution for the customer, I felt a great sense of satisfaction.
Other agents would often ask me to proofread their outgoing emails. Being a lifelong reader, I found I enjoyed tweaking their wording, punctuation, and spelling. Eventually, I decided to develop this skill into a freelance business.
I chose to specialize in proofreading legal transcripts after reading about the court reporter shortage. Having done some transcription/captioning work, I know reporting must be so difficult!
My goal is to save court reporters valuable time by giving their transcripts a final polish.
✓ THOROUGHLY TRAINED - I completed Caitlin Pyle’s Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice course based on “Morson’s English Guide for Court Reporters,” works of Margie Wakeman Wells, and NCRA guidelines. I have “The Gregg Reference Manual” and can research other rules.
✓ REPORTER PREFERENCES RULE - While I was trained on set rules, your name is on the finished transcript. I have a preferences questionnaire for new clients to complete so I can learn your style and tailor my corrections to fit.
✓ WHAT I LOOK FOR - During the extensive practice module of my training course, I developed a checklist to use in my work. I look for errors in formatting, consistency, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. I Google names and places to verify accuracy. I ensure covers, appearances, indexes, and certificates are included as needed.
✓ TURNAROUND TIME - I return pages with suggested corrections in PDF format within 3 business days. Depending on my schedule, I may be available for rush (48-hour) or expedited (24-hour) jobs.
